About Susan
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have taught in some of the best girls' boarding schools in the country. I have also taught in boys' prep schools and boarding schools. I have over 20 years' experience as a piano, music theory and recorder teacher. One of my former pupils is now a principle conductor with the Sri Lanka Symphony Orchestra!
I have performed nationally and internationally and am a sensitive and experienced accompanist.
As a youth worker, I worked with Dorset County Council's Youth Offending Team and am skilled in motivating young people to achieve their full potential.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Last Enhanced CRB check was carried out 18 November 2013
- Where and with whom did you train?
Born in Edinburgh, I qualified as a professional piano teacher following studies at Napier College, where I was awarded an 'outstanding student' medal.
I also studied music at the University of Birmingham, graduating with a B.Mus (Hons). Whilst there I was fortunate to be taught by the distinguished Hungarian pianist Joseph Weingarten, a graduate of the Liszt Academy in Budapest, whose teachers included both Kodaly and Dohnanyi.
- Do you belong to any professional organisations?
Musicians' Union, European Piano Teachers Association, Incoporated Society of Musicians

I'm a member of the European Piano Teachers Association with over 20 years' experience as a piano teacher and accompanist. I teach beginners through to diploma level and believe learning should be fun.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
Piano, Music Theory and Recorder
I specialise in teaching classical music but support and encourage all styles. Every lesson is tailored to the individual student's aptitude and needs. My own musical tastes are many and varied, and I enjoy supporting students in discovering the music that best suits them.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a B.Mus (Hons) and two professional piano teaching diplomas: LRAM and LGSM
I am also a professionally qualified youth worker with a Postgraduate Certificate in Youth & Community Studies
I also passed ABRSM grade 8 oboe with a high distinction.
- How much do you charge?
I recommend an initial consultation lesson, which is absolutely free, as I think it's important to meet face-to-face before making any commitments.
Music theory is usually incorporated into instrumental lessons but can be studied as a separate subject. When demand allows, I teach theory in small groups to reduce costs for participants.
I charge the Musicians' Union minimum rate of £30.00 per hour.

I am available as an accompanist on Saturdays and Sundays (also on weekdays if my teaching schedule permits)

From age 4 (depending on an initial assessment regarding the child's academic skills, emotional maturity, and natural musical abilities). There is no upper limit!
I teach beginners through to diploma level.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
This depends on the student's needs and aptitude.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I strongly believe that learning music should be FUN!
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
My two children thoroughly enjoy their lessons, they have progressed really well, the lessons are fun as well as informative.
Miss Craxton is a really good teacher who makes learning fun and easy, I really enjoy my lessons. Learning the piano has really helped me with my understanding of music and helps with learning the violin (Daisy aged 10)
I've learnt so much since I started, the lessons are good fun, I look forward to them. In less than a year I've passed my Grade 2 with Merit and started grade 5 pieces! The theory that I learn has improved my understanding of music hugely! (Sam aged 12)
